The History of the Castle Through the Centuries
Bourgon Castle, first mentioned in 989, has stood the test of time, remaining at the heart of life in the Bas-Maine region. Discover the major milestones in its history through this timeline.
Bourgon avant Bourgon
Before the name Bourgon became established, the site was under the temporal jurisdiction of Évron Abbey and its surrounding lands.
1218 – 1425First Family: Couesmes
The Chronicles of Laval grant the fief of Bourgon to the de Couesmes family.
1425 – 1577Second Family: Montécler
Charles II of Couesmes mortgaged the castle to secure his release. Jean II of Montécler took possession of the lands of Bourgon because the loan was not repaid.
1528Construction de la chapelle
Construction of the castle chapel by Louis de Montécler.
1577 – 1728Third Family: Souvré, Louvois, Villeroy
The marriage of Philippe-Emmanuel de Laval to Madeleine de Souvré brought Bourgon into the Souvré family line, and subsequently into the Louvois and Villeroy families.
1718Construction of the dining room
Construction of the dining room by Louis de Neuville de Villeroy.
1728 – 1768Quatrième Famille: Pouyvet de la Blinière
First sale of the castle.
1768 – 2004Fifth Family: The Nicolais
Second sale of the château.
2004 – 2021Sixième Famille: Ducatillon
Alain and Isabelle Ducatillon, a couple from northern France, bought the château from the de Corcelles family in 2004.

The estate is home to remarkable flora and fauna—rare species, old-growth forest, wetlands, and Percheron horses.
