In the 14th century, Bourgon Castle was fortified and surrounded by 20 ha of ponds. The four-arch bridge was then the only way to access the castle before crossing the drawbridge. In the 18th century, the old moats were drained to improve soil health and prevent sheep from entering the moat.
However, during heavy thunderstorms, the Bourgon sometimes strays from its usual course before returning to its normal path through the meadows, which are also fed by springs: wetlands remain year-round and are home to many protected species of amphibians, insects, and rare plants.
