The Medieval Tower In the 13th century, the de Couesmes family began construction of the castle with a fortified enclosure, a monumental four-arch bridge spanning the moat, and two twin towers flanking the drawbridge. The Hundred Years’ War made this defense necessary. One of the towers still stands with its bell-shaped roof topped by a banner, riddled with holes from having been used as a target during the German occupation. Be sure to check out the superb roof structure, commonly referred to as an “upside-down umbrella.” One of the towers served as the foundation for the chapel built in 1525.
