Roberto Canowas born in Santa Clara, Cuba, on March 4, 1993. He began taking classical guitar lessons at age thirteen with Professor Rolando Moreno, and later continued his studies with maestro Carlos Rodriguez, known as “el grillo,” a highly renowned luthier who crafts instruments for the island’s finest concert performers.
Thanks to his natural talent and discipline, Roberto Cano took the entrance exams for the National School of Music in Havana three years later. He was accepted as one of the country’s top students and, unusually for Cuba, performed to sold-out audiences during his time as a student.
Very quickly, under the guidance of masters such as Francisco Rodriguez, Joaquín Clerh, and Victor Pellegrini, he began performing the great repertoire of Cuban and international classical guitar, interpreting pieces by Paco de Lucía, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Leo Brower, and Agustín Barrios, among others.
He also participates in competitions, where he has won numerous awards thanks to his technical virtuosity. In 2012, he graduated and began working in his home province of Villa Clara as a teacher and concert performer.
He performs regularly with leading musicians, as well as solo throughout Cuba and with the best. The great guitarist and composer Leo Brouwer created a scholarship specifically for him.
He also conducts the Santa Clara City Guitar Orchestra.
