In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, people believed that salamanders could live in fire. They often made their homes in logs and would rush out of them when the fireplace was lit.
This “supernatural” gift made the salamander an extraordinary creature, which earned it a place on King Francis I’s coat of arms. Its Habits: It especially likes to come out at night and after thunderstorms.
It spends most of its day hidden in cool, damp places (under an old tree stump, a rock, a cave, etc.), and it also spends the winter there from October to March, when it hibernates.
She can sometimes be spotted during the day when she is looking for a water source to give birth to her young. Although she is a protected species, she, like many animals, is endangered; deforestation and water pollution are partly to blame, but cars also play a role. \
