On December 26, 2013, around 8:00 p.m., we came across a “barn owl” that wasn’t very scary… it had lost the ability to fly and was in our path.
What to do! Doomed to certain death at the hands of predators—foxes…—we immediately decided to capture her using a coat and took her to a stable. 
The next day, after doing some research online, we Let’s contact Oniris, the veterinary center for wildlife and ecosystems in Nantes.
We can admit her on December 29, 2013, so she can receive all the care she needs from a specialized team. The challenge is to keep it alive for at least 24 hours, which is a limit for a wild animal.
The vet advises us to put her in a smaller box—the cat’s box will do just fine! Then we need to keep her in a slightly heated place to prevent her from getting cold (in the chapel!) and feed her raw ground meat.
Despite our care, the owl isn’t eating and is getting weaker.
It was high time that we took her to the emergency room in Nantes at 9:30 a.m. on December 29. Taken in by Dr. O. Lambert’s wildlife department, she was rehydrated and treated for arthritis in the elbow of her right wing; she is now on anti-inflammatory medication and is doing better.
She will be released back into the wild as soon as she has fully recovered. Now that’s a great way to start 2014…
