Identifying Nocturnal Birds of Prey: The Barn Owl—silent flight, with calls ranging from whistles to howls!
The little owl: Its call is a loud, shrill “werro.” A clear, distinct meow can also be heard. The female makes higher-pitched, nasal sounds.
Its alarm call is piercing and high-pitched. The tawny owl: it hisses, hoots, hules, howls, and ululates. Hooting.
The male lets out a hou- ora call followed 1 to 4 seconds later by a *ouu*. The female responds with a higher-pitched *ki - ouik*. Alarm call: kvik - kvik - kvik . The Middle Owl: Its most common call is a soft, musical hoot that carries far.
You can also hear tremulous hoots. Sometimes it sounds like a dog barking… When excited, it lets out piercing, heart-wrenching cries or whistles.
You might be able to see or hear a few mammals: the deer barks if it feels disturbed.
