Logging at Bourgon Castle

The forest surrounding Bourgon Castle is subject to a management plan. The owners advocate the Pro-Silva method to ensure the preservation of this ancestral forest. The trees harvested from the forest carry the PEFC certification, which attests to the owner’s commitment to implementing sustainable forest management practices.

Log hauling is one such practice, as it allows logs to be transported out without damaging the trails. Finding a skilled driver who can guide the draft horses with centimeter-level precision is the key to success.

Thank you to Mr. Jean Pierre Lafon for giving us two wonderful days in the company of his Percheron and Breton draft horses. On that note: a superb book to look at: *Les forces de la Nature*, published by L’Etrave, with photographs by Jean Léo Dugast Video of the report aired on France 3 Pays de la Loire on May 21, 2013: Etalons à la sortie du camion Stallions getting off the truck Au travail! Let’s get to work!
